Nigeria on 1st August attains electricity generation of 5,377.8MW

The federal government announces that National Grid generates highest electricity in the Nigeria’s history.

According to a tweet by the Hon. Minister of Power, Engr. Sule Mamman saying that the achievement came  through evacuation of load centers.

The minister also appreciates all that make it happen and promises better electricity generation for Nigerians.

The tweet read; “On the 1st of Aug 2020, the National Grid made history, by attaining a new record peak generation of 5,377.8MW of Electricity which was successfully evacuated to distribution load centres. “Kudos to all involved. We are constantly striving to make Electricity better for Nigerians.”

The main source of electricity generation comes from fossil fuels especially gas which accounts for 86% of the capacity.

Although Nigeria is the continent’s largest economy, only 60% of the population had access to electricity in 2018. This statistic is according to the International Energy Agency.

Consequently, Nigeria’s power sector suffers from poor maintenance of electricity facilities, natural gas supply shortages, and an inadequate transmission and distribution network.

Despite the erratic power supply in the country, Nigeria exports a total amount of electricity worth $81.48bn. That is, Nigeria’s neighbouring countries receive a total of electricity in the last two years. Despite the fact that many households and businesses in the country continued to suffer blackouts.

According to NERC, the financial viability of the Nigerian electricity supply industry is still a major challenge threatening its sustainability.

However, with this achievement, Nigeria is on a path to attaining its 2020-2021 power generation goal.
